The NSA NI Sheep Event Roundup

The NSA Sheep NI event was held on the 1st of July 2025, hosted by our county representative, Alwyn McFarlane’s farm on Dungiven, County L’Derry. The event was a great success, and we were proud to attend as a sponsor.

Our team for the day included Ambassadors Jack Robinson and Rachel Murphy, Head of Operations Billy Hewitson, Head of Member Engagement Gareth Jones, Field Officer Russell Smyth, previous Training and Development winner Stephen Wilson, and Depot Manager Jayne Harkness-Bones.

During the shearing demonstrations, we emphasised the importance of employing a competent shearer and wool handler to maximise potential value at the time of shearing. Jack demonstrated shearing a sheep but did so poorly, effectively cutting the fleece (staple length) in half. He then shore the same sheep again to highlight how much wool was left on the ewe that should have been included with the fleece.

Rachel demonstrated how to roll the fleece correctly, pointing out that the wool over the shoulder is the prime part of each fleece. Presenting this part well can increase its potential for achieving a top grade.

Afterwards, Billy graded the fleece, reiterating the importance of presentation and discussing what a grader looks for when assessing each fleece. We then reviewed the 2024 clip value list displayed on a screen, highlighting the price difference between No.1 and No.2 grades. We noted that poor shearing can devalue each fleece if not executed properly, as demonstrated by Jack's initial example.

Jayne talked about shearing preparation: it’s essential to ensure that sheep are dry and off grass for a good 4-6 hours before shearing, ideally closing them in the night before on slats or compacted bedding. We should avoid using straw and shavings, shed lambs off before running them into the shearing trailer, and not overcomplicate an already busy day with additional tasks like trimming feet or administering medication.

Additionally, we had a trade stand promoting all things Ulster Wool and some fantastic wool products, and we won first place.

The fleece competition had excellent entries. The overall champion was PJ Rooney, who showcased his Romney hog fleece.

Overall, it was a beautiful day with sunny weather and a great turnout. Thanks, and congratulations to Alwyn McFarlane and his family for hosting a very successful event!
