Ulster Wool CAFRE Scholarship Concludes with First Successful Student Placement

The inaugural Ulster Wool CAFRE Scholarship has successfully concluded with a presentation by Ulster Wool Growers to Jessica Wilson, the first student to complete the new industry-first programme.

This innovative scholarship, funded by Ulster Wool Growers, provides CAFRE students with a unique opportunity to gain behind-the-scenes insight into the wool industry. Jessica’s placement has laid a strong foundation for the students who will follow in her footsteps, showcasing the value of this pioneering initiative.

Over her 12-week placement, Jessica engaged in meaningful research on wool, exploring industry practices while developing essential academic skills. The experience introduced her to research methodologies suited to different topics, while allowing her to practice literature reviews, data analysis and professional reporting. These skills will stand her in good stead for her future studies and career, while also strengthening CAFRE’s research focus in the area of wool. Jessica commented:

“This placement has been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much about the wool industry and developed research skills that will be valuable throughout my career. I’m very grateful to Ulster Wool Growers for supporting me on this journey.”

The scholarship, established as a five-year programme, will see one CAFRE student each year benefit from this hands-on placement. It represents an important investment in the next generation of agricultural professionals and a commitment to ensuring that the significance of wool in Northern Ireland’s farming sector is both understood and promoted.

It is a fantastic opportunity for Cafre students as it bridges academic study with practical industry knowledge and strengthens the skills that will benefit both the students themselves and the wider agricultural sector.

Ulster Wool Growers formally presented Jessica with her certificate of completion at a special event marking the conclusion of her placement. William O’Neill MBE, Chairman commented:

We are delighted to see the first year of this scholarship conclude so successfully. Jessica’s hard work has set the bar high for future students, and this initiative ensures that young people gain the real-world experience needed to keep the wool industry thriving. Investing in young people is vital for the future of the wool industry. This scholarship provides a platform for students to see the potential of wool as both an economic and sustainable product, while inspiring the next generation of leaders in agriculture.”

Applications for the next scholarship placement will close on 19th December. For further details on how to apply please contact: [email protected]
