I embarked on my wool handling journey just over a decade ago, captivated by the texture and beauty of the fleece.
2. Why do you enjoy wool handling?
Wool handling has introduced me to a wonderful community. I cherish the friendships I've formed over the years, and the anticipation of shows fills me with excitement as I get to reconnect with familiar faces. Sharing my passion through instructing others adds another layer of joy to this experience.
3. Can you explain what a wool handling competition is and what participants have to do?
A wool handling competition is a showcase of artistry and skill, centered on the meticulous presentation of fleece. Competitors aim to highlight the fleece's quality and beauty, ensuring every element is perfectly arranged.
4. What are your top three tips for new competitors in wool handling?
Always remember to address every part, especially the crutch, as it plays a significant role in presentation. - Pay close attention to the belly wool; it's an essential component that should not be overlooked. - Above all, immerse yourself in the experience and have fun! Enjoying the process is what makes it all worthwhile.
5. How has your season gone so far?
My season has been nothing short of rewarding. I proudly clinched 1st place at the Balmoral Show, an exhilarating achievement, and secured 3rd place at Mountbellew, further fueling my passion for wool handling. Additionally, I competed at the Highland Show over the weekend and finished in 3rd place.
6. Do you have any tips for farmers on how to best present their fleeces?
To truly showcase your fleeces, meticulously remove all dags and roll them with care. A well-prepared fleece speaks volumes about its quality and will leave a lasting impression on judges and spectators alike.
